Cosplayer Spotlight – Eugene_Cosplay

Check out this cool cosplayer an his awesome insights. Hope this brightens your Monday like it brightened mine.

Please introduce yourself.

My name is real name is David Hanna both on Facebook and Instagram. However, my handle on Instagram is eugene_cosplay.

What is your favorite beverage?

Ginger Ale! My grandmother always had it in her house as a kid. Can’t get enough of the stuff, as I often not buy it for my house since I know it’s going to be gone in a minute by myself.

Tell me a little about yourself?

My name is David Eugene Hanna. I’m a 21 year old African American male living in Brooklyn. My handle on Instagram comes from my middle name and as a joke, since my friends love calling me my middle to embarrass me, calling me Eugene Krabs or Eugene from Hey Arnold!

When did you start cosplaying?

The summer of 2016, at the small Inbeon Con 2016. I won best male cosplay!

Why did you start cosplaying?

I love these characters and want to be them. I feel like cosplaying brings me closer to them. Even as a kid, I knew this because I love dressing as superheroes. Mostly, Spider-Man, my favorite superhero of all time.

Who are your cosplay idols?

T-Stunning Spidey, Elise Laurenne, @Spidey Luc, @SpideyFit, D-Piddy, Patrick Skye, Maid of Might, @Sonicspiderman, @Pheelgoodcosplay,, @Piercearooni Cosplay,, and Momokun/@MariahMallad. All are on Instagram, some have YouTube channels.

What types of cosplay do you do?

I mostly do DC and Marvel superheroes. I would love to spread my wings, but I am very picky about what I cosplay, and I barely watch anime. I am thinking about One Punch Man, Link from LoZ, Future Trunks (or Vegeta), Noctis from Final Fantasy 15 and Cloud from Final Fantasy 7.

What are your favorite cosplays?

From other people? In that case, I love any and everything. In fact, I have a Collection on Instagram filled with people that just do great cosplay. I go into the Explore page and just scroll until I’m bored. I save maybe, one or two pictures every two or three days.

What is something you want to cosplay but probably never will?

The Arkham Knight version of Batman from the video game. UD Replicas has a great costume, but throw on a cowl, custom cape, better version of the belt… It’s a lot of bank. Made me humble myself into other Batman costumes, like the New 52 or Justice League version with the square abs and curved ears on the cowl.

Do you make, buy, or special order your cosplays?

I buy all my costumes, I’m a perfectionist and if I made my own costumes it would never get done or I’d be starting over/wasting money and time repeatedly. Rather not put myself into that black hole of stress. I had my Robin (Young Justice) belt custom ordered, but that’s about the extend of it.

What do you love about cosplay?

The community, and kids. The kids that don’t have cosplay on the street or even in the cons, LOVE you. And seeing those innocent faces light up is amazing on all fronts. The community, when you meet non-toxic people or even people like Iso Rivers, willing to interview you and give you some shine… Well, it’s magical and feels like a family away from your family.

What is the most difficult thing for you about cosplay?

Being told to do a certain character because of your skin color, build or height. Hate that. Also, being comfortable. Like, to the point where you can keep your costume on all day. I’m always either too hot or too cold.

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

Spider-Man. I plan on a MCU Captain America maybe, but Spider-Man because of the notoriety. EVERYONE knows Spider-Man. He is the one of the most profitable heroes ever, and as a result everyone knows him. I get the most love when I’m Spider-Man, for sure. I think the best reaction was on Halloween 2016 where I dressed up as a red and blue Spider-Man with my brother wearing my CW Green Arrow costume, I saw this kid while I was trick-or-treating with my little cousins. I saw this kid twice on two different blocks, and each time he dropped his jaw and hugged me. I was HIS hero, and mask and all, I almost cried. This kid was me, a few years ago. Hell, he’s me right now. Made me forget that I was catching frostbite.

If you could live in orvisit any fantasy world, where would you go?

The Pokemon universe. I wanted to ride on Lugia since I was a kid, since I saw the second movie.

Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?

Mostly from the people I see on Instagram. Not only from the famous cosplayers I follow, but from getting on the Explore page and just scrolling forever. I see them and say “Yeah, I can do that” or even better, if I had the money.

What are your “fandoms”?

I don’t really follow fandoms. I just enjoy any and everything using my own opinion. I’ve never gotten that deep into anything, but I’m aware of fandoms. But I had to say I belong to any, it would be the Sonic fanbase, which is more infamous than famous.

What is something you wish beginning cosplayers knew?

Going as Spider-Man? Bundle up. Don’t? Enjoy freezing.

What tips do you have for other cosplayers?

Be you, cosplay is not consent and cosplay whatever YOU want to. Not what people say you should do.

What is something you wish non-cosplayers knew?

This isn’t “dress up” or “play time” like gaming, this is a million+ dollar industry that people have been doing for decades, just like gaming. Only in the 2000’s did it become so mainstream.

What cosplays are you working on?

Captain America, from Civil War, perhaps. Thinking about Danny Phantom and classic Mr. Incredible.

What cosplays do you want to do if money and time were no object?

Reverse Flash from the CW TV series, Batman from Arkham Knight and a full MCU Iron Man.

Where can people find your cosplays?

@eugene_cosplay on Instagram. I post some stuff on FB as well.

Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
