TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I’m a new mommy. I’m about the get married. I’m the oldest of three sisters. Im a career bartender with a background in media and marketing.
WHEN DID YOU START COSPLAYING?
I’ve always had a love of costuming as a kid. In high school and college being in theatre I worked all my tech assignments with costuming. But actually “cosplaying” with the intent to cosplay started in around 2010.
WHY DO YOU COSPLAY?
Because it’s fun! Plus, as an adult now and out of school, it feeds that hunger for performance that I miss from being involved with performing arts.
WHO ARE YOUR COSPLAY IDOLS?
I have a lot of really talented friends around me that inspire me and we help and support each other, including my friend Robert from Cosplay Speaks who has turned his Autism diagnosis and his love of cosplay as a way to reach others on the spectrum and help empower them to be themselves.
More recognizable names: Yaya… I mean come on. Also, Scruffy Rebel (Victoria from Heroes of Cosplay). Both of these women I had the joy of meeting in person and loved every moment of it.
WHAT TYPES OF COSPLAY DO YOU DO?
I do a lot of SciFi: Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars. Also a lot of cartoons like Chuckie Finster and Ms. Frizzle. And some comic book characters like my favorite: Poison Ivy.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COSPLAYS?
Poison Ivy. She’s my bread and butter. She’s my favorite. I have so many variations of Ms. Pamela Isley. But also The tenth doctor from Doctor Who, who I have several female, genderbend versions of.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO COSPLAY BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL?
I never thought I’d cosplay Batwoman but I’m actually working on one right now inspired by the upcoming CW show staring Ruby Rose. (I mean, her name is Kate… who could I NOT?) So I don’t know if there’s any I would probably NEVER comply is I want. I may need some encouragement, but I think if I want to do something, I just do it.
DO YOU MAKE, BUY, OR SPECIAL ORDER YOUR COSPLAYS?
I do a lot of refurbishments and alterations. Some of my cosplays were inspired 100% bc I found a really awesome piece at a thrift store and got inspired to create. I do a lot of piecing together. Id love to learn how to work with eva foam and make armor though….
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COSPLAY?
The comradely. I’ve met some of the best people through cosplay. I have people I consider close friends who I only see at state cons.
WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING FOR YOU ABOUT COSPLAY?
Confidence. I come off as super confident but just like everyone, I have some serious and deep-rooted confidence issues. Sometimes cosplayers label me as something I’m not or accuse me of being one of those “fake nerd girls” doing it for the IG “likes”. That hurts. It feels like the days in middle school, getting picked on for my gapped tooth, frizzy hair, potato shaped body and overall not-coolness all over again but on the opposite side of the spectrum.
Who is your favorite character to cosplay?
Poison Ivy and The Tenth Doctor.
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN OR VISIT ANY FANTASY WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO?
If anyone answers anything other can The Wizarding World, they’re lying.
Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?
Lots of places. sometimes just seeing comic artwork, sometimes from a good thrift store find and other times from friends like my good friend Meshell who inspired me and gave me the confidence boost I needed to work of Batwoman.
WHAT ARE YOUR “FANDOMS”?
Doctor Who, Harry Potter, DC Comics (but specifically Gotham stories.), Star Trek, Star Wars. The Marvel universe. Those are my biggest ones.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH BEGINNING COSPLAYERS KNEW?
Don’t be afraid. The community will embrace you and protect you from negativity and anyone with a crappy attitude. Do whatever you wan without the restrictions of what you fear others will think. I promise you, we all have our fears and doubts and I believe bc of that we help boost each other up.
WHAT TIPS OR TRICKS DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER COSPLAYERS?
You can turn something into something amazing with a few tweeks. You don’t have to start any project from scratch.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH NON-COSPLAYERS KNEW?
That we have fun. And we are fully aware we’re weirdos. But weird is awesome and we live our lives full of fun without fear holding us back; do you?
WHAT COSPLAYS ARE YOU WORKING ON?
Batwoman right now. Also a new version of Poison Ivy. I’m also working on a lot of closet cosplays of Disney Princesses in everyday clothing.
WHAT COSPLAYS DO YOU WANT TO DO IF MONEY AND TIME WERE NO OBJECT?
Oh gosh, I don’t even know. Theres so many!
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR COSPLAYS?
On my blog, my IG page and my Facebook page.
What are your favorite cons to attend?
I’m on Floridas Treasure Coast so mine include: MegaCon Orlando, MegaCon Tampa, Florida Supercon.
What do you do when you encounter negativity or bullies within the cosplay community?
What I do? I tell them to F off whether its on my behalf or someone else’s. I may have my own fears and confidence issues but I will bury those deep down and muster up some brass ones to defend anyone being picked on. I’m also not afraid to go in on anyone acting “superior” within the cosplay community ad putting others down.
