Weirdies Supporting Weirdies!

Cosplayer Spotlight – Harlcole Cosplay

Happy Friday everyone! What better for Friday than to have a Harley cosplayer! Enjoy!

What is your name?

Harlcole Cosplay or Nic Maci

What is your favorite beverage?

Coffee without it I wouldn’t get through the day and the long nights in my shop!

Tell me a little about yourself?

I’m 33, reside in Calgary Canada. I just recently completed a Masters Degree from the University of Manitoba. In my free time I love creating all kinds of fan art. Right now I’m currently hooked on creating different Christmas bulbs featuring cartoon characters (90% off Christmas stuff will do that). I also love to build props of all kinds. Right now I’m working on another Harley Quinn mallet and her prop gun. I’m also currently working on getting my Etsy shop going. I am going to open with different mallets I have created and from my Christmas collection all 10 sailor scouts.

I love animals and have three fish tanks, a cat named Kali, and a dog named dexter.

When did you start cosplaying?

About four years ago or so but really I just started getting into it about 2 years ago. I’ve travelled to multiple conventions now and last sept I was able to get both my nieces involved in the cosplay community by taking them to their first convention!

Why did you start cosplaying?

My best friend has been going to conventions for years and asked me to go with her one year. I was completely blown away with the creativity and the costumes I decided to give it a whirl. Haven’t looked back since.

Who are your cosplay idols?

Oh my gosh there are so many amazing cosplayers out there. My go to cosplay has always been, and will always be Harley Quinn and there is no shortage of amazing Harley cosplayers but mother of pirates, cherry pie, swallow cosplay, madlove cosplay, and steampunkharley all come to mind. I also love toxic pudding and jokersjollies. Outside of my go to I also love patchcosplay, hollyanime because the makeup she does is beyond amazing, and oddly enough edmontonalbertasuperman. This is funny because Superman is my least favorite superhero. In fact, i can’t stand Superman 🙈. But I love his costumes, and the amazing photos he posts. His love for cosplay and the character really pops and I love that!

What types of cosplay do you do?

I am all about variety But I think villains are my favourite. Harley Quinn, poison ivy, black lady from sailor moon, and Sarah Sanderson from Hocus Pocus.

What are your favorite cosplays?

Harley will always be my go to! My favourite was holiday Harley that I took to Calgary Christmas expo in Nov. I had so much fun with the character and was able to take a tone of awesome photos like knocking Santa out! Outside of Harley I think chibusa from sailor moon was my favourite. I built her Luna P Ball and it was a hit! I got to meet so many awesome sailor moon fans because of that ball! So many awesome people came up to ask questions about it!

What is something you want to cosplay but probably never will?

There are no limits on what you can create only challenges. My most challenging cosplay will be Ashoka from starwars. It’s taken me forever to get the cosplay together and I am having a real struggle with how to create the headpiece for it. But I’ll get there!

Do you make, buy, or special order your cosplays?

I do a combo of things. Sometimes I make my costumes (my Chibiusa dress I did the night before expo), and sometimes I start with a base but I almost always alter them some how. I build all my own props though. I love that creative process and I think I’d be depressed with out it. Though, I think my husband is losing his patients with how many mallets and bats we have around the house.

The one exception to making my own prop was this awesome bat I bought from darksyid cosplay. I bought an Arkham knight harley bat from him and it’s awesome.

What do you love about cosplay?

I absolutely love cosplaying anti hero’s or the villains. It gives me a chance to really explore the complexities of characters through my build process and I love that! I also love the people. I’ve met many new friends not only at my local expo but also through IG that are spread throughout the world. That to me is amazing.

What is the most difficult thing for you about cosplay?

Patience. I am not a patient person and most of my builds take over a month to complete. That is so hard for me.

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

Harley Quinn. I find that she is just such a diverse character you can literally make her fit in anywhere. For example, in summer 2016 I joined a beach dodgeball team called supervillians in training and I played that whole season as Harley Quinn on the dodgeball court. It was so much fun!

If you could live in or visit any fantasy world, where would you go?

Hands down Gotham city. I love absolutely everything about the world of Batman. I love how the characters are complex and I’m not sure they any of them are just straight up evil. They are all complex people. Harley Quinn has a weird sense of morality, for example she loves animals (seemingly more then people) and will go to great lengths to protect her babies, Mr. Freeze destroyed his world when he tried to save his wife, and poison ivy is so protective of Mother Earth that it has driven her to eco terrorism and she won’t even let Harley have a Christmas tree at Christmas time. And the joker? Well, he’s just insane and I love it.

Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?

Everywhere! Friends, family, other cosplayers, tv, comics, manga. Cosplay allows my creativity to really come out. I’m usually on sensory over load to the point where I keep and pen and journal by my bed because I have been known to wake up in the middle of the night with ideas or solutions.

What are your “fandoms”?

I love a variety of things but mostly super villains and my fave is DC. I also love mangas (sailor moon, full metal, psycho pass, aijin). And finally Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been my comfort food since it came out. I watched my DVDs so many times I’ve wrecked them. And I won’t even tell you how badly I can girled when I finally met James Marsters.

What is something you wish beginning cosplayers knew?

Don’t ever think you can’t do anything just go for it. And google is your friend 🙂

What tricks do you have for other cosplayers?

Plasti dip is the best invention ever. If you’re working with foam once you’re done through a couple coats of plasti dip on it to make it durable and give it a great finish.

Also don’t be afraid to jump into thermoplastics I wish I started sooner.

What is something you wish non-cosplayers knew?

I try to stay positive but this is something that I am particularly sensitive about as I have been bullied in the past by non cosplayers so I am at the point where I just want them to know I am having fun and if they want to approach me with tips on how to adult better they shouldn’t waste their time.

What cosplays are you working on?

Sabiene Wren And Ashoka from starwars rebels and Vampire willow from Buffy. I hope to pull these out throughout 2018

I’m always working on a new Harley Quinn. In particular I am working on a special Harley Quinn for sept 2018 but I’m keeping that idea to myself for now ;).
