Hi, what is your name?

Hi, my name is Temperance Ava Grace, I also go by

Insta: @dr.harleenquinzel_army or @mystic_witch_cosplay

Twitter: @sapphirestorm_

What is your favorite beverage?

That’s a tough one because the healthy part of me wants to say that I love fruit infused water and then the irresponsible part of me is whispering in my ear to grab another Red Bull.

Tell me a little about yourself?

I am 26 years old, and I would like to say that I’m pretty well rounded when it comes to my crazy passions. I have been doing theater since I was five years old and have stared in and helped put together a total of 167 shows. I’m a singer song writer, an author, and photographer. I thrive off of the arts and the need to push people to follow all of their passions no matter who they are or what they are. My best friend and I plan on opening a witch themed coffee shop as that is what we both are, but I also plan on making a go of it in the paranormal community. What did I tell you? Well rounded either that or extremely focused to be unfocused. For the cosplay community I run a page that is dedicated to making Instagram a safer, kinder, and more accepting place. I have designed a charity group called CFCA (Cosplay For Charity Act) in which calendars full of cosplayers will be sold with proceeds going to the ASPCA. I am in the process of creating a “Cosplay safe database” in which information on businesses, photographers, and places that are safe and trusted to be used country and nation wide. Finally I am one of two creators for RME (Rainbow Media Effect) which basically is calling out and or thanking actors, producers, writers and more that either positively or negatively depicted the LBGTQ+ community in music, movies, tv, or books using cosplay as a basis to represent the characters and the fans who deserved better.

When did you start cosplaying:

I started cosplaying in 2008 but I never knew there was a name for it, I also only did it for me. No outlet on social media.

Why did you start cosplaying?

I started because I have always loved being someone other than me to be honest. I suffer from depression and schizophrenia that at times can be disabling. Cosplay gave me a reason to step out of myself and become someone new, I am now in a mental state that is better than ever before and it’s given me a confidence and friendships I never believed I could have. I am still medicated and likely always will be but I can strongly say that I don’t rely on a pill anymore to make me happy.

Who are your cosplay idols?

Everyone who cosplays is my idol. It takes everyone doing cosplay for their own reasons and that to me is beautiful. On my share page @dr.harleenquinzel_army I post people of all shapes, sizes, ages, races, genders and more because each person has something beautiful that they bring to a character. If I feel that I shouldn’t be cosplaying something because of my weight I sign on and see someone my size sporting an original Harley Quinn suit and all I’m thinking is “that girl is freaking gorgeous.” My biggest inspirations, however, are @lehmermaidqueen who is my best friend Shelby. She is who taught me everything about what cosplay really is and with out her is still be hiding. @originalkiller.clown Sammy, because she took me in and will never let me quit. Then of course @everyday_harleyquinn with out her I literally wouldn’t have a page.

What types of cosplay do you do?

I do a lot of villains. I just feel like they are way more fun. Harley, obviously, but this year I’m dedicating my cosplay time to opening up to newer characters for me. Tv shows, cartoons. I have 18 planned this year ranging from gwenpool, to Veronica lodge, to olivia Moore, to Kim possible.

What are your favorite cosplays?

I’m still fairly new at posting, and con life, but it’s quickly grown to be one of my greatest loves in life. My favorite cosplay right now is my Christmas Harley. It’s the first one where I ever felt truly myself with in a costume. I look forward to doing my squad Harley over again. I feel like she is going to be my pride. My all time favorite thus far, however, was when I cosplayer as Norma Bates. Love that crazy.

What is something you want to cosplay but probably never will?

To be honest I hate the word never because I said I would never cosplay squad Harley and I’m one piece away from her being finished. Said I would never do original Harley and I have her in my closet ready to suit up. I’m a strong believer in if you want to do something only you can stop you.

Do you make, buy, or special order your cosplays?

I do all of the above. There is great talent in making things and I can to a point but honestly it’s tough, so I have no shame in supporting girls who make things. Whenever I wear a commissioned product I can feel the love and the pride in every stitch. It’s not how much you spend either. It’s about the character. Whether you buy an ivy costume or you spend 12 hours glueing leafs to a bathing suit, you’re gonna smash it.

What do you love about cosplay?

I love everything about it. I know that’s a really lame reply but I do. I guess my favorite thing is seeing so many people put their differences aside and become close friends bonding on just being nerdy and having fun.

What is the most difficult thing for you about cosplay?

I am more confident about my body now than ever before but I am plus size, so finding clothes even to alter them is sometimes really disheartening and has made doing some characters really difficult.

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

Harley for now, just because she is such a fun person to be. Who doesn’t want to be a cute little psycho.

If you could live in or visit any fantasy world, where would you go?

The world where Lucifer is real. I love that show and every character and I feel as though I would fit in haha!

Where do you get your inspiration for your cosplays?

My passions. Like I said before I get crazy passionate about things fast so my obsessions are strong. If I love a show or movie my cosplay wheels immediately start turning.

What are your “fandoms”?

Lucifer, riverdale, all DC, deadpool, Spider-Man, qwenpool, old Disney, izombie, basically any musical, the list goes on and on.

What is something you wish beginning cosplayers knew?

It’s okay not to be perfect. Don’t let someone make you feel like you are less than them. Step out in every character you do with pride because someone, somewhere no matter how new you are to this is going to look up to you.

What tips do you have for other cosplayers?

If you are only going to cosplay something once, sell the costume to help fund new ones, and don’t be afraid to reach out to other people, girls and guys in this community are more than ready to help.

What is something you wish non-cosplayers knew?

We don’t do this for your approval, we aren’t hurting anyone, and if we don’t talk shit about your passions you can kindly leave ours alone.

What cosplays are you working on?

Gwenpool, Kim possible, Abby Scutio, three different Harley’s, Veronica Lodge a whole bunch.

Photographer @amberdawnbrant

What cosplays do you want to do if money and time were no object?

All of the Disney princesses, a punk rock buttercup, and about six different poison Ivy’s.

Where can people find your cosplays?

Or @dr.harleenquinzel_army

Do you have any pets?

And yes I have 12 cats!

Please remember I do not own any of these pictures and the opinions in this survey belong to the interviewee.
